unwrapping: Tumblr Theme Tally: Tumblr revised its curated theme gallery on Dec. 18, 2013, organizing themes into seven categories and 20 collections. By my count, 1,677 out of 9,027 themes are linked from tumblr.com/themes as of Jan. 3, 2014. Of the 1,677 linked themes, 90 percent are free, and 10 percent cost from $9 to $49. Where did I get a total of 9,027 themes? Tumblr assigns a sequential number to each theme, which forms the tail end of a theme URL. I generated ample potential theme URLs and ran them against a link checker. The result: 9,027 theme URLs came back valid. Although there are some gaps (likely to be theme deletions), these valid URLs follow a chronological sequence. In fact, Tumblr CEO David Karp created Themes 1 through 5. Skimming the 7,350 unlinked themes, I see several cool themes Tumblr might consider for its curated themes site. I’ll highlight my favorites in future posts.
