keyofnik: So this was awesome. Usagi’s going on and on (AND ON AND ON) about Chibi-Usa in the rain, and I kind of love that sometimes Usagi is emotionally stupid like that. That she gets hung up on this detail and can’t see beyond it. For all that Usagi loves everyone, sometimes she is just not good at reading subtleties. (Not that Chibs is being especially subtle here.) She latches onto a detail and can’t seem to let that go, and that seems so at odds with how good Usagi is at looking through all of a person’s bullshit to the important stuff beneath it. But then sometimes it’s like her own emotions blind her. She’s instantly worried about Chibi-Usa (who you have to think basically snuck out, I can’t imagine they were “Sure honey, go have fun in the dark and the rain”), but can’t push past the physical worry to see all the turmoil that led to it. She’s especially bad about this where Chibs is concerned. Usagi has a gigantic blind spot around Chibi-Usa. I’m not entirely sure where that comes from. But now I’m beginning to wonder if that’s not a source of how Chibs reacts back to Usagi. She’s so purposefully antagonistic sometimes and I wonder if she’s just pissed because it’s like Usagi can get everybody else in the entire goddamn universe BUT NOT ME. I dunno. Have to think about that one. But anyway, so we have Usagi all focused on the rain part, while Mamoru is able to not only see that it’s sort of not the point, but also that Usagi is ACTIVELY MAKING IT WORSE. We see him intercede like this multiple times across the series, and it’s not hard to imagine that it happens like this in Crystal Tokyo too. I quite like that Mamoru is able to be both perceptive AND objective. Also I just really want to point out panel three and its adorable little pissed child face.
