Topo map of Old Farm Hill Park, an undeveloped park in my neigherborhood, superimposed on the Google Earth satellie view. Terrain setting is 2, so I could see if the countours of the land approximated the contours of GE's terrain.

Interestingly, from this angle, the street isn't quite matching as well as the contours are.

Random wapElite Combat Screens Contact Sheet

Random wapElite Combat Screens Contact Sheet
Originally uploaded by Catt Family.

In wapElite each combat turn had the image created on the fly based on the current situation.

Each Elite ship has it's own base graphic in two versions, flying towards and away from the player, and at 3 different ranges; near, middle and far.

The server would work out what was attacking a player, if the ships were being aggresive or retreating and how close they were. It'd then flip and rotate the selected image randomly and place it in the viewport (if the ship was attacking the front shield).

If the player had hit the ship they were targeting then the image was placed in the cross hairs.

Pulse Laser was shown with two single lines, Beam Laser with doubled up lines and Military as solid beams.

A plot of all systems in Galaxy 1 of Elite. Players are plotted around each system, the colour of the line represents how recently they had been active. The distance was how far from the system they were. Right around the planet means they are docked.

You can see how players stuck around the starting planets, such as Lave and Diso.
