keyofnik: Things I Love About This Episode: Makoto Edition I go on at length about how much I love Rei and Usagi’s relationship — or I will anyway, trust me on this — but Makoto is there in all things as a solid and unwavering second. Where Usagi and Rei are a bundle of layers and complexity, Usagi and Mako are simple, direct, and absolutely necessary. Makoto is the straight-forward loyal protector with her heart double-stitched on her sleeve. She loves her friends with everything she has, and will stop at absolutely nothing to keep them safe and happy. She is so pure in her motives that it makes me want to cry. She does not like Rei’s shit. She does not GET Rei’s shit. This dancing around feelings, talking in undercurrents, it’s completely inexplicable to Mako. We rarely see Mako getting truly angry with her friends, but Rei frustrates the ever-loving hell out of her, and I love that. I love that the relationships between all these characters is that rich. For Mako, standing by and watching as Usagi is in pain has to be the hardest thing she’s ever had to do. It is so perfect and right that she’s the one that breaks first.
