keyofnik: moon-cat-of-misandry: keyofnik: Well it was no “Fuck Shit Up! Ladies of the White Moon”, that’s for sure. It wasn’t bad. It did its job okay as an energizing fight song, but I don’t think Usagi’s solo sections were a great choice. Maybe if her actress had a more powerful voice that could’ve worked, but she just sounded so awkward and nervous that it completely punctuated that she was alone in those sections. That’s the exact opposite of what you want in a song about everyone uniting. Those solo bits in there should be inspiring, using Usagi to gather her Senshi together so then they all explode into the rousing verses, but instead it just sucked all the energy out of the song and caused it to lose momentum. And since it’s a group song, there wasn’t any opportunity for anyone to really stand out. They were all choreographed pretty much the same. So not a “must stop and watch again” song for me, which is a pity, because I get the sense that that’s precisely what it’s supposed to be. Weirdly, this song gives me all the emotions specifically because Satomi’s voice isn’t terribly strong. The way it shakes and can’t quite hit the notes strongly make it sound that much more earnest. If anyone’s voice is going to be weak, it should be Usagi. But fuck it if she’s not going to sing her heart out anyway because she is Sailor Fucking Moon, god damn it. Plus, and I have no idea if I’m the only one, but: All young ladies hide away a light, deep in their rooms No matter how sad she may be She’ll be a stronger soldier tomorrow That bit in particular feels like Usagi is talking to me directly. She is telling me that maybe I’m sad and maybe I can’t get out of bed today, but tomorrow, you’ll have survived it. If you survived it, you’re stronger, and one day - maybe even tomorrow - you’ll be strong enough to fight back and kick life in the face. At which point I cry like a small disturbed child, which I’d feel bad about, BUT FUCK YOU SAILOR MOON CREATES THE STRONGEST MAGIC IN THE UNIVERSE FROM CRYING LIKE A SMALL DISTURBED CHILD SO THERE. I 100% understand why that doesn’t work for everyone - particularly if you compare it to other ‘time for battle!’ songs like “La Soldier” and “Sailor War” (this is why I whole-heartedly recommend that when at all possible, do not compare La Reconnectthedots with any of the other stage shows). But it works for me. I love this less critical view of the performance. I can’t quite go there with you (at least not right now, I might with repeat viewings), but I completely respect embracing Usagi’s weaker vocal performance in La Reconcokecan and folding it into her character. I love, too, this emotional response to the song. Basically I just love this post a lot.
